Master of QHSE – Juha Malinen: “The impact can be seen in daily operations”

Juha Malinen, Head of QHSE at Raumaster Oy, emphasises the importance of knowledge on management systems standards and understanding the big picture in his work. His goal is to continuously improve operations across all of his areas of responsibility.
Juha Malinen steps in front of the camera at the Nortamonkatu office. The camera flashes, and suddenly from behind our backs we hear the Head of QHSE is urgently needed for a project matter. It’s not an unusual situation, as Malinen’s broad expertise is required in various scenarios.
QHSE stands for Quality, Health, Safety and Environment. At Raumaster, the Head of QHSE oversees both strategic and operational quality control and HSE.
"The impact of these systems can be seen in daily operations, even if people might not realise it. The goal is continuous improvement in all areas, leading to better results for the entire company", Malinen explains.
His work involves consulting on projects, including customers’ QHSE requirements and practices, internal and subcontractor auditing, updating information in customer portals, creating reports, updating operational manuals, and handling quality feedback, suggestions for improvement and HSE notices. Additionally, Malinen participates in investigations of possible ethical violations.
"If everything goas as planned, I am practically only involved in the bidding phase of the project. Jonne Saarilehto leads everyday inspections in-house. The everyday impact is primarily achieved through different systems, usually in situations where something has not gone as hoped or planned."
"A definite requirement in my work is knowledge of management system standards and a comprehensive understanding of the big picture. I also need to know about order and supply chains, understand equipment and have a command of manufacturing techniques at a certain level."

Reporting on a Lower Threshold Than Ever
Malinen has worked at Raumaster since autumn 2018. Initially, his role only included quality, but his responsibilities soon expanded to include health, safety, and environmental matters. A few years ago, sustainable development functions also became part of his job description.
"The threshold for reporting on quality and HSE matters has significantly lowered. For example, quality reporting now includes situations that were previously considered normal", Malinen says.
"Knowledge of QHSE matters has significantly increased both within our company and among our clients. In recent years, clients have also adopted the practice of verifying their suppliers’ sustainable development standards."
Malinen’s previous work experience includes positions in the defence industry, foundry and the marine industry. He is an engineer from a university of applied sciences and an International Welding Engineer (IWE), on top of which he has completed 30 credits of master’s studies.
"I’ve been at Raumaster for the longest employment period of my career. We have an excellent understanding of the clients’ needs, and we need to be able to transform this knowledge into concrete equipment and services as efficiently and flawlessly as possible."
"The goal is continuous improvement in all areas, leading to better results for the entire company."
Master of QHSE – so how is QHSE mastered?
Juha Malinen, QHSE Manager, Raumaster: “It can all be summed up in four words: plan, implement, evaluate and develop. The gratification of my work comes from noticing how progress has been made, and how we have not made previous mistakes again. This means the management system has worked. The number of reports alone does not lead to progress, but the changes made in the operational processes and practices based on the reports do.”
